There are three main essentials that are required for every person to be able to live comfortable. These essentials include clothing, shelter and food. The United States government provides a government program that helps people afford food during times of unemployment or financial hardships.
The Food Stamp program or the SNAP program is developed to help those in need receive the nutritional supplements that they need to survive. Every month a set amount of money is deposited on an EBT card that those that qualify can use to buy certain approved food at stores.
Even though everyone may feel like they deserve to get these benefits there are some qualifications that must be met in order to receive funding through the SNAP program.
Here is a look at some of the areas that the agency will look into to see if you qualify for food stamps.
Income. Income requirements are required to qualify for Food Stamps. You must be under the federal poverty level. The poverty level changes with the number of people that live in the house but if you are above that line you do not qualify.
Assets. You are not allowed to have more than $2,000 in assets or investments. This can include bank accounts, bonds that are paid out. Owning one home is not considered a part of the assets but more than one household vehicle could harm your chances of getting food stamps.
Work Requirements. Those that are in the house and able to work must be actively looking for work and may under certain state laws be required to work in federal work programs to receive benefits.
If you qualify for food stamps you are generally approved for a three month period and must reapply after that time frame. Some states will approve you for more than three months but most states do not approve for more than a year’s worth of time.
