The Cost of Assisted Care

It is often hard enough to realize that we can no longer care for our elderly relative and then we realize we have to look into other options for care.  Sometimes a retirement home is an option.  Sometimes we have the option of keeping our relative at home and getting home care.  Sometimes their medical condition is bad enough that it will require a nurse to be available around the clock and thus they need to be in a nursing home.  Or it might be a situation where we can have them placed into an assisted living facility.  No matter what the situation might be, we will realize soon enough that the cost will not be an easy thing to swallow.

The cost of this care depends on which situation we find ourselves in and how much care is needed for our elderlay relative.  Just having someone provide home care a few days out of the week is not going to cost as much as skilled nurses at a nursing home which could run as much as ten thousand a month.  So the question then becomes how do we pay for this care?

If you do not have private funds for an assisted living facility, nursing home or other care for you or your relative, you will need to get help from government funding programs like Medicaid or Medicare.  Medicare is premium-free in certain conditions or you could pay a monthly premium.  It will cover things like hospital stays and stays at skilled nursing facilities like nursing homes as well as some home care.  This government health program can also cover medical supplies, to tests, to transplants and more.   If cost of care is a concern, make sure to take the time to look into help from the government.
