Let’s face it as a parent you are probably human and susceptible to making mistakes. In fact, there isn’t one parent on this planet that is mistake proof. That means that when it comes to handling your teenager there is a high possibility that you might make a mistake. While you can make a mistake in handling food or how long you ground your child, knowing how to handle situations like preventing your child from running away can really come in handy.

There is no guaranteed way to make sure that your teen will not run away but there are certain things that you as a parent can do to make sure that you do not create a situation where you child feels as if they need to run away. Here are some of the things that you can do to prevent your child from running away.

Talk to your Child. Some of the best preventative tips are to make sure that you are leaving an open line of communication between yourself and your child. Many runaways run because they feel as if they are misunderstood or not being heard. Make sure your child knows that they can talk to you at any time and that the lines of communications are always open.

Respect. Treat your child with respect and they are less likely to run away. Make sure that you are treating them like an adult, respecting their life while being a parent at the same time. There is a fine line between respect and parenting but it can really help.

Responsibility. Give your child responsibilities that allow them to feel grown up. Let them know that they have this new found responsibility and they are required to keep it up. If they don’t there will be consequences. This might sound harsh but it really helps to draw boundaries as a parent and it can help prevent your child from running away.
