Getting through Your Recent Divorce

Divorce. Some say it’s an ugly word, but you’d like to think of it as your first step toward hope. Still, you’re on your own now, maybe you have children, perhaps you’ve never been on your own or provided for yourself. You’re scared and need help.

What do you do?

  • Find someone to talk to. This can be a friend or coworker and may even be a family member, but usually it’s best to find someone who is out of the picture somewhat; someone who’s been through a divorce or who has already connected with you and can listen more than talk.
  • Do some research; find out what government agencies are out there to help you. Consider applying for food stamps if you don’t bring in enough money.
  • Get some helps from online sources including websites and blogs to help you in the parenting of your children.
  • Allow yourself a cry when you need it, but give yourself a time frame for doing it. Fifteen minutes is a good goal. After the 15 minute cry, reward yourself with something positive, whether it’s an ice-cream cone or a walk around the block.
  • Get involved in your community. Help others going through the same hurt.
  • Join a local divorce support group. Learn from others and share what you have learned.
  • Participate in a social networking group whether online or off. Find others who are on the positive road back from their own divorce.

Divorce is never easy, but often, it’s one of the most important decisions we’ll ever make.
